Video: How Life Returned to South Georgia Island

Image
South Georgia Island holds a special place in my heart, having visited it for the first time last year and with its deep ties to the story of Ernest Shackleton. But, it has an amazing story of its own. A story of resiliency and the return of life. At one point, man had done what was thought to be irreparably damage to the island's ecosystem, but now the indigenous creatures that exist there have returned in astounding numbers with thousands of penguins, seals, and albatross located across the island, while whales once hunted to near-extinction now prowl off its coasts once again. It is a great success story that you can learn a lot more about in the video below.

Video: Inside a Penguin Colony with a Population of more than 400K

Image
When I was in the Southern Ocean last year, I witnessed a penguin colony with more than 400,000 birds. It was one of the most amazing sites i have ever seen. In this video, National Geographic takes us to another such site, this time located at South Georgia's St. Andrews Bay. The clip below will give you a sense of the sights and sounds (but not the smells!) that come along with such a massive penguin population. It is something that has to be seen to be believed, but it is truly an amazing experience.
