The Adventure Podcast Episode 40: The Best Gear of Winter Outdoor Retailer 2018

Image
If you like outdoor gear then you're going to love this week's Adventure Podcast. My co-host Dave Adlard and I are back from Denver, Colorado where we attended the 2018 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market and saw lots and lots of new products that will be heading our way in the near future. With so many backpacks, boots, jackets, and other products to sift through, it is tough to pick our favorites, but we did manage to narrow our list down to six items that became the first winners of our "Best of Show" awards. Which pieces of gear impressed us? You'll just have to listen to find out. Because we spent the majority of the episode talking outdoor gear we skipped our regular gear segment this week. But, we did start the show as we usually do by talking about the biggest stories in adventure and exploration from the past week. Those stories include an attempt at the speed record for skiing to the South Pole, a record-setting swim around the United Kingdom, and a potentia...

Endurance Athletes Becomes First to Swim Completely Around Great Britain

Image
This past weekend a British endurance athlete completed his attempt to swim completely around his home country. The journey, which covered more than 1790 miles (2880 km) took 157 days to complete, as triathlete, strongman, and all-around inspiration Ross Edgley wrote his name in the record book by becoming the first person to circumnavigate Great Britain by swimming and completing the longest staged sea swim in history as well. Edgley began his journey five months ago, setting out from the harbor in the town of Margate back on June 1. His route took him clockwise around the British Isles, as he focused on swimming six hours at a time, each and every day. A support ship followed along with him to ensure his safety, and when it came time to take a break Ross would climb aboard the ship, get some much needed calories (as many as 15,000/day) and sleep. Over the course of the five month expedition he didn't step foot on land once, instead living aboard the catamaran when he wasn't...

Gear Closet: Suunto 9 Fitness Watch Review

Image
As an avid runner, cyclist, and outdoorsmen in general, I love wearing a watch that can keep track of my activities levels on a daily basis, but especially during a workout. For me, my day-to-day timepiece of choice is an Apple Watch , in part because it does a great job of reminding me to stay active, but also because of all of the other features it brings to the table, most notably displaying notifications, granting me access to my calendar, allowing me to respond to texts, and a host of other things. So when I got the opportunity to test out the new Sunnto 9 fitness watch, I was worried that I'd miss all the things that Apple Watch provided for me. Turns out, I had nothing to worry about at all, as the 9 offers much of the same functionality, along with more features for fitness tracking and much better battery life. Suunto is well known for creating excellent watches for use in the outdoors, and the 9 is no exception. It is built tough enough to survive in the harshest of cond...

Ben Lecomte is 1000 Miles Into His Pacific Ocean Swim

Image
Way back in June we reported on the start of long distance swimmer Ben Lecomte's attempt to swim across the Pacific Ocean. Later, we followed up that story with an update on his progress and the news that he was encountering far more trash and plastic debris than expected. Now, we have further news on this monumental undertaking as the French endurance athlete passes a major milestone. Lecomte is now approaching the end of his fourth month in the water and progress has been slow and difficult at times. When he set out, he estimated that it would take roughly 180 days to complete what he calls The Long Swim . But this undertaking is proving even harder than he suspected as Ben has only now passed the 1000 nautical mile (1150 miles/1852 km) mark. Still, he isn't about to give up and there is a lot to accomplish out on the water yet. Part of the challenge has been the number of massive storms that Ben and his team have encountered while crossing the Pacific. There has been an u...
