Ultrarunner Completes Alaska to Florida Journey on Foot

Image
A few weeks back I shared the story of Pete Kostelnick , an ultrarunner who was in the midst of an epic journey from Alaska to Florida on foot. At the time, Kostelnick had just entered the state of Georgia and was continuing to make his way south towards his eventual finish line in Key West. On November 5, he crossed that finish line, bringing an end to one of the most impressive human-powered journeys we've seen in some time. Kostelnick started his trans-continental run on July 31 in Anchor Point, Alaska with the intention of running all the way to Key West in 100 days. He ended up cover the distance between those two points in 98 days instead, running a total of 5384 miles (8664 km) in total. That means he covered roughly 55 miles (88 km) each and every day of the trip. The ultrarunner's route took him out of Alaska, across Canada, and back into the U.S. in the state of North Dakota. From there, he went through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia...

Ultrarunner is Traveling From Alaska to Florida on Foot

Image
Ultrarunners are certainly a different breed. They love the challenge of covering long distances completely under their own power and they don't mind being entirely alone for long periods of time. That often leads to not only some impressive ultra-length races and events, but some truly amazing and record-setting expeditions too. Take endurance athlete  Pete Kostelnick for example. A couple of years back, he set a new record for running from San Francisco to New York City, completing his run across America in a little more than 42 days, covering 3067 miles (4935 km) in the process. Now, he's in the midst of another long distance challenge, this time going from Alaska to Florida. Pete set out on his journey back on August 1, departing from Kenai in Alaska. The plan is to cover approximately 5000 miles (8046 km) before reaching his ending point in Key West, Florida. As I write this, he is already through the majority of the trip, entering the state of Georgia and heading south t...

Jax Mariash Finishes First in Female Division at Grand 2 Grand Ultramarathon

Image
Courtesy of Grand 2 Grand Ultra I'm a little late in posting this news, but I haven't seen it shared too many other places and I definitely thought it was worth a mention. Back in August, I shared the news that ultrarunner Jax Mariash was gearing up for three extremely difficult challenges over the course of the following month or so. Those tests of her endurance included the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado,  the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in Europe, and finally the  Grand 2 Grand Ultra , which was held in Arizona and Utah at the end of September. After surviving that demanding gauntlet of difficult races over such a short period of time, she also managed to write her name in the history books as well, taking first place in that final event. The Grand 2 Grand Ultra is a 170 mile (273 km) race that begins at the rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and ends at the summit of the Grand Staircase in Utah. The event is broken up into six stages over seven days, with competitors rem...

Ultrarunner to Attempt Greenland Ice Sheet Crossing

Image
Even in the 21st century a crossing of the Greenland ice sheets is a significant undertaking. At more than 2400 km (1500 miles) in length, the ice sheet is the second largest body of ice in the world, behind only Antarctica. Traversing such a wild and challenging place requires stamina, skill, and determination on par with skiing to the South Pole. But now, a Finnish endurance athlete is hoping to complete such a crossing on foot, running the entire way. Adventure runner  Jukka Viljanen  has announced that he will attempt to run across the ice sheets eschewing the use of skis to travel on foot instead. If successful, he'll become the first person in history to accomplish such a feat. In doing so, he hopes to shine a spotlight on the impact that climate change is having in the polar regions of our planet, including Greenland where rising temperatures is already starting to have an impact on the lives of the individuals living there.  Viljanen intends to set out on this jou...

Video: This Father and Sons Made it a Family Affair on the UTMB

We all know that the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc is one of the toughest trail races in the world, tasking runners with the arduous task of circumnavigating the iconic mountain as quickly as possible. It typically isn't a race for beginners, but as you'll see in this video two semi-pro racers who also happen to be brothers, convince their father to join them out on the trail, making this a true family affair. Fun, inspiring, and beautiful, this is a great short film about their adventure.
