Gear Closet: Salomon Predict RA Road Running Shoes Review

Image
Road runners listen up! Salomon has a new running shoe headed our way that is as comfortable and well-designed as any that I've ever used, offering up a new level of support and protection for our feet. The new Predict RA is lightweight and features some impressive new technology that promises to reduce stress on the hips and knees, but unfortunately most of us are going to have to wait a few months to get our hands on them.  If you're like me, the first thing you'll probably notice when you take the new Predict RA out of their box is just how soft and light they are. Tipping the scales at 9.4 ounces, these shoes fall squarely into the medium range in weight however, neither sliding into the minimalist category, nor seeming bulky in any way. They do have plenty of cushion however, which may conjure up images of some of the shoes offered by the team over at Hoka One One . That said however, I've always felt that Hoka's offerings were a bit too overly cushioned, red...

Ultrarunner is Traveling From Alaska to Florida on Foot

Image
Ultrarunners are certainly a different breed. They love the challenge of covering long distances completely under their own power and they don't mind being entirely alone for long periods of time. That often leads to not only some impressive ultra-length races and events, but some truly amazing and record-setting expeditions too. Take endurance athlete  Pete Kostelnick for example. A couple of years back, he set a new record for running from San Francisco to New York City, completing his run across America in a little more than 42 days, covering 3067 miles (4935 km) in the process. Now, he's in the midst of another long distance challenge, this time going from Alaska to Florida. Pete set out on his journey back on August 1, departing from Kenai in Alaska. The plan is to cover approximately 5000 miles (8046 km) before reaching his ending point in Key West, Florida. As I write this, he is already through the majority of the trip, entering the state of Georgia and heading south t...

Gear Closet: Suunto 9 Fitness Watch Review

Image
As an avid runner, cyclist, and outdoorsmen in general, I love wearing a watch that can keep track of my activities levels on a daily basis, but especially during a workout. For me, my day-to-day timepiece of choice is an Apple Watch , in part because it does a great job of reminding me to stay active, but also because of all of the other features it brings to the table, most notably displaying notifications, granting me access to my calendar, allowing me to respond to texts, and a host of other things. So when I got the opportunity to test out the new Sunnto 9 fitness watch, I was worried that I'd miss all the things that Apple Watch provided for me. Turns out, I had nothing to worry about at all, as the 9 offers much of the same functionality, along with more features for fitness tracking and much better battery life. Suunto is well known for creating excellent watches for use in the outdoors, and the 9 is no exception. It is built tough enough to survive in the harshest of cond...

Image
Yesterday we had the inspiring story of a 91-year old man who climbed Devils Tower in Wyoming. Today, we have an amazing video about George Etzweiler , a  97-year old runner who summits Mt. Washington in New Hampshire every year, even though the challenge only continues to grow. Why does he do it? You'll just have to watch the clip below to find out.

Video: What it Takes to Complete the Western States Ultra

Image
Have you ever wondered what it takes to complete the grueling Western States Endurance Run , a tough 100 mile (160 km) race that is amongst the most difficult and famous in all of ultra running? In this video, you'll get some insight into that question thank to three ultra runners, each offering up their perspective on balancing training, family, work, and other commitments just to get to the starting line. If you're a runner, you're likely to find a lot to relate to here. If you're a non-runner, you'll probably find this fascinating.

Video: How Should Your Running Shoes Fit?

Image
Yesterday, when I wrote a review of the Salomon Sense Ride trail running shoes , I mentioned that fit and comfort were somewhat subjective. While that is true, what ever running shoes you put on your feet should provide a similar level of support and performance. So just how exactly should they feel on your foot? This excellent little video from REI helps explain it. It does a good job of describing how your heels, toes, and other parts should fit into a good pair of running shoes. Finding the ones that feel the best to you will be the next step.

Gear Closet: Salomon Sense Ride Trail Running Shoes

Image
The fit and comfort level of any footwear is a highly subjective thing, especially in the realm of trail running. Finding a shoe that fits your needs can be a challenge at times, as comfort is only one factor to consider. Stability, durability, breathability, traction, and a host of other variables come into play when selecting the shoe that works best for us. Fortunately for me, Salomon has always had an impeccable track record in each of those areas, delivering footwear designed for trail runners that are looking to push themselves a little further. Recently I've been running in a pair of Salomon Sense Ride trail shoes, which have been designed to be a versatile option for use on a wide variety of different types of running routes. I've worn the Sense Ride on everything from dry, rocky trails, to muddy, wet routes, and pretty much everything in between. I've even worn them on road runs, and while they are not completely suited for that environment, they still performed ...

After taking a couple of weeks off while I was on the road, The Adventure Podcast returns with a new episode this week. You'll find a number of classic films on our list, along with a few surprises too we hope. As usual, we start the show with some stories from the world of exploration and outdoor adventure, including an update on the fall climbing season in the Himalaya, a new land speed record by a cyclist, and a new world record in the marathon as well. Then, we wrap things up with some gear news and reviews, with Dave sharing a new duffel bag that has caught his eye, while I chime in with some thoughts on BioLite's new Headlamp and a comfortable new sleep system for camping.
